Medicare has a key split

As of September 2026, Medicare drug plans are still allowed under federal law to leave out a medicine prescribed to lose weight.

That same drug may still be paid for by Medicare when the prescription is for a different approved use, for example diabetes or reducing the chance of a heart attack or stroke, but each plan uses its own list of covered drugs and its own approval steps.

Ask the plan in exact words

  • Is this exact product on the plan’s drug list?
  • Is it covered for my diagnosed condition?
  • Does the plan need approval before the pharmacy fills it?
  • Which pharmacy must fill it?
  • What will I pay at this pharmacy?

Get the answer in writing

A coverage call can be hard to remember. Save the plan message, case number, or letter. Ask the prescribing office what records the plan needs.
